How to Jump Start a Car: A Step-by-Step Guide

A dead battery is the most common roadside breakdown there is. The good news: jump starting a car is straightforward once you know the order of operations — and the order matters more than most people realise.

This guide covers both methods: using a portable jump starter (no second car needed) and using jumper cables with another vehicle.

First, confirm it's actually the battery

Not every no-start is a flat battery. Quick checks:

  • Rapid clicking when you turn the key — classic flat battery.
  • Dashboard lights dim or dead, no crank — likely battery.
  • Engine cranks strongly but won't fire — probably not the battery. Could be fuel or ignition. A jump won't help.
  • Absolutely nothing, no lights at all — could be a flat battery or a corroded/loose terminal. Check the terminals first.

If the engine is turning over confidently, stop reading — a jump start isn't your fix.

Before you connect anything

Read these. Batteries store a lot of energy and vent flammable hydrogen gas.

  • Turn off the ignition and all accessories in both vehicles.
  • Put the car in Park (automatic) or Neutral (manual), handbrake on.
  • Inspect the battery. If it is cracked, leaking, visibly swollen, or frozen, do not jump start it. Call for assistance.
  • Remove metal jewellery and watches.
  • Never let the clamps touch each other once connected to a power source.
  • Don't lean over the battery while connecting.
  • If your car has a designated jump-start point under the bonnet (many modern cars do), use it instead of the battery terminals. Check your manual.

Method 1: Using a portable jump starter

This is the method that doesn't require a second car or a stranger's help.

  1. Check the jump starter has charge. This is why you top it up every few months — a jump starter at 0% is a paperweight.
  2. Keep the jump starter switched off while you connect.
  3. Red clamp to the positive terminal (+) on the flat battery. It's usually marked with a plus symbol and often has a red cover.
  4. Black clamp to the negative terminal (−), or better, to an unpainted metal part of the engine block or chassis away from the battery. Grounding away from the battery reduces spark risk near vented gases.
  5. Switch the jump starter on. Most units have an indicator confirming a correct connection — if it warns of reverse polarity, stop and recheck.
  6. Try the ignition. Crank for no more than 5 seconds. If it doesn't start, wait 30 seconds before trying again.
  7. Once running, switch the jump starter off, then remove the black clamp first, then the red.
  8. Drive for at least 20–30 minutes to let the alternator put charge back into the battery. A short trip to the shops won't do it.

Method 2: Using jumper cables and a second car

Order matters here. Follow it exactly.

  1. Park the working car close — nose to nose or alongside — but make sure the two vehicles are not touching.
  2. Both engines off.
  3. Red clamp to the flat battery's positive (+).
  4. Other red clamp to the good battery's positive (+).
  5. Black clamp to the good battery's negative (−).
  6. Final black clamp to unpainted metal on the dead car's engine block or chassis — not the dead battery's negative terminal. This is the step people get wrong. Grounding here keeps the final spark away from the battery's hydrogen vent.
  7. Start the working car. Let it run for 2–3 minutes.
  8. Start the dead car. Crank for no more than 5 seconds at a time.
  9. Remove the cables in exact reverse order: black from engine block, black from good battery, red from good battery, red from revived battery.
  10. Drive for 20–30 minutes.

If it won't start

Two or three failed attempts means something else is wrong. Don't keep cranking — you risk overheating the starter motor.

  • Check the terminals. Corrosion (white or blue powder) blocks current. Clean connections matter more than people expect.
  • Check the clamps are biting bare metal, not paint or plastic.
  • The battery may be beyond a jump. Batteries typically last 3–5 years. If yours is older and has been getting sluggish, it likely needs replacing.
  • It may be the alternator. If the car starts on a jump but dies once disconnected, the alternator isn't charging.

Why the battery went flat

Worth knowing, so it doesn't happen again:

  • Lights or accessories left on. The classic.
  • Short trips only. Starting the engine draws a lot; a 10-minute drive doesn't replace it. Repeated short trips drain a battery over weeks.
  • Cold weather. Low temperatures reduce a battery's available cranking power significantly — more on why car batteries die in cold weather.
  • Age. Capacity fades gradually, then fails suddenly, usually on the coldest morning of the year.
  • Parasitic drain. Something drawing power with the car off — a dash cam, a faulty module.

The case for carrying your own

Jumper cables need a second car, a willing driver, and enough room to park nose to nose. That's fine in a supermarket car park at midday. It's less fine at night, in the rain, on a quiet road, or in a multi-storey where nobody can get close enough.

A portable jump starter removes the dependency. You're not waiting on anyone. The trade-off is that you have to remember to keep it charged — set a reminder every three months.
